Well for the Journey is thrilled to announce that Maria Broom, Baltimore’s own award-winning artist, joy-bringer, teacher, dancer, actor, storyteller, author, and hope ambassador will be the speaker for our Spring 2023 Well Said Speaker Series fundraiser. The event will take place on Thursday, April 20 from 6-9 pm ET at Grace United Methodist Church in Baltimore (corner of Charles Street and Northern Parkway.) Maria will be with us for an in-person evening event filled with hope in support of the mission-based work of Well for the Journey. We invite you to join us for “The Dance of Hope: An Evening with Maria Broom.”
ABOUT MARIA
Although nationally known as an actress for her recurring roles in HBO’s “The Wire” and “The Corner”, Maria is also a storyteller and dancer with more than forty years of performing and teaching in the US and across the globe. She is a Fulbright scholar and former news reporter for the ABC affiliates in Miami and Baltimore. Currently, she is on the theater faculty at the Baltimore School for the Arts. A native of Baltimore, Maria has received many awards and honors including the Eubie Blake Award, the Sarah’s Circle Award and the 2004 Governor’s Arts Award for Individual Artist. In 2007, she was named, Artist of the Year by Young Audiences of Maryland, Inc. In addition to her work as performer and educator, Maria is much requested as a speaker and presenter. With a background in yoga, meditation, Homa therapy and dance therapy, she conducts staff retreats, workshops and weekly classes that help people to release stress and feel at peace. Formerly, the diversity coordinator for the Park School in Baltimore, she has been a consultant since 2006 for Maryland Public Television’s Campaign for Love and Forgiveness, sponsored by Fetzer Institute. As a recipient of an Open Society Institute community fellowship grant, Maria established a unique mentoring program in the inner city schools, and beyond, called the Dance Girls of Baltimore. It is through this vehicle that she passes on the values of self-discipline and thoughtful behavior. In 2007, Maria worked in Poland and Czechoslovakia co-directing the independent film “Soul Immortal” released in 2010.
WELL SAID SPEAKER SERIES – THURSDAY, APRIL 20, 2023
“The Dance of Hope”
Do you ever think about hope? Like…really think about it? Do you think of yourself as hopeful? Do you ever doubt that good things will come to you, or that things will get better across this country or the world? Author and Life Coach Michael Neill said, “There is never a good reason not to hope!” Well, our next Well Said Speaker Series will host Baltimore’s own Maria Broom and she heartedly agrees. The much-loved dancer, storyteller, and actress widely known for her roles in HBO’s The Wire and The Corner believes that being hopeful is like a dance we each do every day as we try to keep our spirits up, endure, and make sense of these unpredictable intense times.
Join us on April 20 for an intimate and entertaining evening that may turn any doubtful skepticism into a healthy, realistic optimism, introducing us to the metaphysical idea that our thoughts and our words are much more effective and powerful than we realize. We invite you to The Dance of Hope… where you’ll leave with a more hopeful heart and spirit (and very likely, some hopeful dance moves) to carry out into the world.
The Well Said Speaker Series is a fundraiser to support the
mission-based work of Well for the Journey.
