Well for the Journey: History

WHERE WE BEGAN — AND WHERE WE ARE NOW

It started with a calling.

In 2002, Mabeth Hudson and a small group of kindred spirits felt drawn to create something that didn’t quite exist yet — a place where people could tend to their spiritual lives outside the walls of any particular religion, in the company of others who were also seeking.

They didn’t have a building, a budget, or a blueprint. What they had was a conviction: that the spiritual dimension of life matters, that community makes it richer, and that people were hungry for exactly this kind of gathering place.

They started gathering in a borrowed classroom. They invited people in. And people came.

A different kind of growth.

The Well has never grown the way most organizations do… we’ve grown the way we were formed: by listening, by following what we were called toward, and by trusting the community that kept showing up.

It’s unique, but it’s also why the Well feels the way it does. Every program, every relationship, every new face that walks through our door has arrived because something real drew them here.

Twenty-four years later.

Today, Well for the Journey is in its 24th year. What began in a borrowed classroom is now rooted in a warm, welcoming three-story home in Historic Lutherville, Maryland — a building that feels, to many who enter it, exactly like what it was always meant to be.

From that space, we now offer more than 120 programs each year — in person, online, and to a community that stretches far beyond Maryland. People join us from across the country, gathering in small groups to explore, question, connect, and grow together.

What hasn’t changed.

Through every year of growth, the soul of the Well has stayed the same. We are still guided by discernment over strategy, relationship over reach, and community over scale. We still believe that tending to the spiritual dimension of life is one of the most important things a person can do — and that it’s always better done together.

We are grateful beyond words for every donor, volunteer, staff member, and participant who has made this community what it is. You are the Well.
