SOLD OUT: Sacred Drum Making at Well for the Journey (In-Person Program)

Saturday, May 4, 2024 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm EDT

This program has reached it’s capacity and is now sold out.  We have created a wait list in case someone who is registered is unable to attend. Join the wait list here.

We are delighted to welcome back master drum maker and spiritual teacher, Starfeather Marcy, for another wonderful opportunity to make your own sacred drum!

Hand-drums have been used for centuries by Indigenous people around the world in spiritual ceremonies. Starfeather has been facilitating drum making for over twenty-five years. In this intimate workshop, you will make your own hand-drum in ceremony and within sacred community. Starfeather has created an easy, step-by-step process to guide you through this experience. It is approached as “sacred crafting”, a prayerful, contemplative, and relaxing day of creation. Participants will honor all materials, including the animal hides and the wooden drum frames, as well as the process of creating a tool that becomes an instrument for prayer, meditation, sound healing, and enjoyment.

The program will begin with an opening prayer of gratitude and an opportunity for introductions and brief sharing. Starfeather will then offer a short history of drumming and an explanation of the materials and the tools to be used. Each participant will be making a 15” Elk hide drum and drum beater. The style of drum to be created is from the Northwest US and Canada.

No skills are needed beyond the basic ability to use scissors and a mallet and punch. All tools and materials are provided.

The program consists of three parts:

Part One: Preparation of materials by punching holes in the hides, cutting rawhide lacing and making drum beaters.

Part Two: Return for a brief meditation. Then, careful lacing up of drums and bringing them into being.

Part Three: Learning how to care for your drum is explained throughout the creative process. The day will end with a closing sharing and a prayer of gratitude.

Each drum is as unique as are the people who make them. The process of drum making is a unifying experience, especially when done in sacred community. You will leave this workshop with something you have made with your heart and hands that will last a lifetime and can become part of your legacy, a gift to pass on to the next generation and to use in your own spiritual practice now.

Please bring a bag lunch and beverage for your lunch break.
