SUMMARY:Group Spiritual Direction 2023-2024 with Cathy Rosensteel (In-Person Program)
DESCRIPTION:Group spiritual direction is a process in which people gather together on a regular basis to assist one another in an ongoing awareness of God (Spirit\, Source\, Creator\, whatever your word is) in all of life. Members must agree to: \n* commit themselves to an honest relationship with God\n* to participate wholeheartedly in the group process through prayerful listening and response\n* to open their spiritual journeys for consideration by others \nThis contemplative approach to spiritual direction is grounded in the model that originated at the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation in Washington\, DC. The group is limited to five participants and is facilitated by Cathy Rosensteel. The group will meet both in-person at the Well and on Zoom (During the winter months as as noted below.) \nThis group has space for one new person this year. SUMMARY:Horizons Men's Group 2023-2024 (Hybrid Program)
DESCRIPTION:“Where else could I go to have such a deep conversation about the spiritual journey with other men?” \nThis question is heard regularly as the Well’s Horizons Men’s group gathers to have honest conversations about how we might live out our spirituality as men in the world – within our daily living. \nPast Horizons’ series have focused on themes such as the deconstruction and reconstruction of faith\, the first and second halves of life\, spirituality and imperfection\, why do bad things happen to good people\, and what can we learn from other faith traditions – just to name a few! \nThe 2023-24 Horizons discussions will be guided by Brian McLaren’s book\, Do I Stay Christian: A Guide for the Doubters\, the Disappointed\, and the Disillusioned. McLaren says\, “There is a way to say both ‘yes’ and ‘no’ to the question of staying Christian by shifting the focus from whether we stay Christian to how we stay human.” So\, it follows that the question\, “Are we living out of the truth of our tradition or from its doctrine\, dogma\, and “supposed to(s)?” is one for all faith journeys. We will use McLaren’s book to guide us into this wider conversation. \nIf you are looking for a community where hard questions are welcomed and explored from the unique perspective of the male spiritual journey\, we have a place for you. Join Greg Cochran\, the Well’s Executive Director\, for a free online information session to learn more about Horizons and see if this community is what you might be looking for – Tuesday\, September 12th at 7:00 PM ET. \nHorizons Men’s Group will meet on the second Tuesday in October and then the third Tuesday thereafter (November – June)\, from 7:00pm-8:30pm ET. Our plan is to meet in-person with the option to “zoom in” for those who may not live close by or for those for whom “zooming” is more comfortable. Come check us out! \nDATE: Tuesdays\, 10/10\, 11/21\, 12/19/2023 and 1/16\, 2/20\, 3/19\, 4/16\, 5/21\, 6/18/2024\n\nTIME: 7:00 – 8:30 PM ET\n\nCOST: $195  \nREGISTRATION is required; please register here.\n\nCANCELLATION POLICY: Please read our cancellation policy\, here.\n \nLOCATION: Well for the Journey – 120 W. Seminary Ave\, Lutherville-Timonium\, MD 21093 and Zoom: You will receive an email from Well for the Journey the week of the program\, (usually 2 days in advance) with the Zoom Link. Please be sure you have received and read this email a minimum of 24 hours in advance of the start of the program. If you are unable to find the email\, please search your email folders\, including your spam folder. Thank you.\n\nFACILITATOR: Greg Cochran\n\nFACILITATOR BIO:\nGreg has been the Executive Director at Well for the Journey since 2010. He is a graduate of Clemson University and Southern Seminary. Greg was Associate Pastor at Woodbrook Baptist Church serving from 1988-2022. He also is a program/retreat facilitator and a spiritual companion. He completed the Shalem Institute’s Spiritual Guidance Program (SGP) in 2009 and is currently a SGP staff member. He is also a mentor for Paseo’s “The Stewards of Mystery” Spiritual Guidance Program in Cottonwood\, Idaho. Greg and his wife\, Carole\, live in Baltimore. They have two children (26 and 24). Greg is a hiker\, photographer\, woodworker\, and loves being with family – and is always desiring to be open and listening for the invitation of the Spirit.

SUMMARY:Qi Gong for Wellbeing of Body\, Mind\, and Spirit (In-Person Program)
DESCRIPTION:Qi Gong is an ancient Chinese healing practice that combines focused breathing\, gentle movement\, and meditation to promote wellbeing of body\, mind\, and spirit. “Qi” is our “life force energy” and “Gong” is the skill or practice of using that energy. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)\, poor health is connected to stagnant energy in the body. Qi Gong is used to keep Qi balanced and flowing – especially during times of stress\, illness\, or these early days of Spring when\, like the plants pushing through still cold soil\, we can push through our obstacles to emerge as our own true selves. \nAs our Qi begins to flow more freely\, we can move from a stuck feeling to a more open one. We can notice and acknowledge emotions as they arise and even choose to release them\, kind of like peeling away the layers of an onion to get to the core – the core of who we are\, minus all the layers of our lives\, past and present\, which can compromise our health and well-being. We can make room for centeredness\, positive connection\, thoughtful communication\, vitality\, and our growth as human beings on this beautiful planet. \nJoin experienced Qi Gong Instructor and Health Advocate\, Mindie Flamholz\, to learn the simple breathing techniques and gentle movements of Qi Gong. Qi Gong can be done standing\, seated\, in a wheelchair\, or in bed. Movements can be modified and even imagined! I can imagine swimming in a lake without being there! All you need is an open and curious mindset and a willingness to try. \nThis program will be held outside at the Well. In the event of inclement weather\, the program will move inside. \nDATES: Fridays\, 4/26\, 5/3\, 5/10\, 5/17/2024\n\nTIME: 1:00 – 2:30 PM ET\n\nCOST: $15 per session or $55 for all 4 sessions\n\nLOCATION: Well for the Journey – 120 W. Seminary Ave\, Lutherville-Timonium\, MD 21093 \nREGISTRATION is required; please register here. \nCANCELLATION POLICY: Please read our cancellation policy\, here. \nPREPARING FOR YOUR PROGRAM:\nYou will receive an email from lorie@wellforthejourney.org at least 2 days in advance of the start of your program. This email will include details to help you prepare for your program including any pertinent handouts\, location information\, and the Zoom Link for online programs. Please be sure you have received and read this email a minimum of 24 hours in advance of the start of the program. If you are unable to find the email\, please check your SPAM or JUNK email folders. Thank you!\n\nFACILITATOR: Mindie Flamholz\n\nFACILITATOR BIO:\nMindie loves the practice of Qi Gong\, especially outside\, no matter the season. For her\, the practice reminds her that as reflected outside in Nature\, so is inside each of us. In her words — standing beneath a tree as its leaves fall\, inhaling cold\, crisp winter air\, loosening warming soil with my fingers\, moving in water with the motion of the waves… I breathe and exchange life giving forces with all around me. What a gift ! \nIn her experiences of learning Qi Gong\, Mindie has trained with Chan Zhang\, Mantak Chia\, Dr. Kevin Chen\, and Lee Holden among others\, while her teaching experiences have engaged and supported school children\, women who have been abused\, been previously incarcerated\, suffered the loss of children\, or been diagnosed with cancer\, in addition to stroke survivors\, stressed-out hospital staff\, physical therapists\, individuals in recovery\, seniors in residential communities\, and more. Mindie continues to share the benefits of Qi Gong with many others and to grow in her own body\, mind\, and spirit. \nMindie also loves The Well! She finds that each program she has taken has broadened her and made her feel more connected to herself and others.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT: Sacred Drum Making at Well for the Journey (In-Person Program)
DESCRIPTION:This program has reached it’s capacity and is now sold out.  We have created a wait list in case someone who is registered is unable to attend. Join the wait list here. \nWe are delighted to welcome back master drum maker and spiritual teacher\, Starfeather Marcy\, for another wonderful opportunity to make your own sacred drum! \n Hand-drums have been used for centuries by Indigenous people around the world in spiritual ceremonies. Starfeather has been facilitating drum making for over twenty-five years. In this intimate workshop\, you will make your own hand-drum in ceremony and within sacred community. Starfeather has created an easy\, step-by-step process to guide you through this experience. It is approached as “sacred crafting”\, a prayerful\, contemplative\, and relaxing day of creation. Participants will honor all materials\, including the animal hides and the wooden drum frames\, as well as the process of creating a tool that becomes an instrument for prayer\, meditation\, sound healing\, and enjoyment. \nThe program will begin with an opening prayer of gratitude and an opportunity for introductions and brief sharing. Starfeather will then offer a short history of drumming and an explanation of the materials and the tools to be used. Each participant will be making a 15” Elk hide drum and drum beater. The style of drum to be created is from the Northwest US and Canada. \nNo skills are needed beyond the basic ability to use scissors and a mallet and punch. All tools and materials are provided. \n\nThe program consists of three parts: \nPart One: Preparation of materials by punching holes in the hides\, cutting rawhide lacing and making drum beaters. \nPart Two: Return for a brief meditation. Then\, careful lacing up of drums and bringing them into being. \nPart Three: Learning how to care for your drum is explained throughout the creative process. The day will end with a closing sharing and a prayer of gratitude. \nEach drum is as unique as are the people who make them. The process of drum making is a unifying experience\, especially when done in sacred community. You will leave this workshop with something you have made with your heart and hands that will last a lifetime and can become part of your legacy\, a gift to pass on to the next generation and to use in your own spiritual practice now. \nPlease bring a bag lunch and beverage for your lunch break. \nDATE: Saturday\, May 4\, 2024\n\nTIME: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM\n\nCOST: $250\, includes all materials\n\nLOCATION: Well for the Journey – 120 W. Seminary Ave\, Lutherville-Timonium\, MD 21093 \nREGISTRATION is now closed due to capacity; you may add your name to the wait list here. \nPLEASE NOTE OUR CANCELLATION POLICY FOR THIS PROGRAM: Given the cost of the drum making materials\, the Well is not able to offer any refund if you are unable to attend the workshop after registering. You are welcome to gift your ticket to someone else if you are unable to attend. Please call the Well if someone else will be using your ticket. Thank you for your understanding! \nPREPARING FOR YOUR PROGRAM:\nYou will receive an email from Well for the Journey at least 2 days in advance of the start of your program.
They are seeking support for their responsiveness to God and they agree to support others in that same responsiveness. Three conditions are essential to the life of the group. If you are feeling nudged to give Group Spiritual Direction a try\, please call the Well at 410-296-9355. We will connect you with Cathy so that you can discuss your interest with her. \nDATES (At the Well): Saturdays – 9/9\, 10/7\, 11/11/2023 and 3/9\, 4/13\, 5/11/2024\nDATES (On Zoom): Saturdays – 12/9/2023\, and 1/13\, 2/10/2024 \nTIME: 8:30 – 11:00 AM \nCOST: $250 \nLOCATION: Well for the Journey – 120 W. SUMMARY:Meditative Movement as a Path for Holy Listening (In-Person Program)
DESCRIPTION:Most people accept the idea that the mind can be a tool for spiritual exploration – we use the mind in meditation and prayer\, and we read and ponder spiritual literature with our minds to deepen connection with the Holy. Emotions are also another mode of spiritual inquiry; think about the devotional approach of some religions as accepted practice to enhance spiritual experience. But we often don’t spend much time thinking of the spiritual access to be gained through the body and movement. In fact\, in some religious traditions\, the body\, the “flesh\,” was thought to be a barrier to more spiritual aspirations. However\, our bodies are truly wonderful sources for deep and holy listening if we understand how to pay attention. \nJoin Spiritual Director and Retreat Facilitator\, Beth Wood-Roig\, as she shares practices from different spiritual traditions for listening to our bodies’ innate wisdom. We will explore various forms of movement\, sometimes meditative\, sometimes silly\, hopefully fun\, and ever surprising.

SUMMARY:Group Spiritual Direction 23/24 with Franklin Adkinson (In-Person Program)
DESCRIPTION:Group spiritual direction is a process in which people gather together on a regular basis to assist one another in an ongoing awareness of God (Spirit\, Source\, Creator\, whatever your word is) in all of life. They are seeking support for their responsiveness to God and they agree to support others in that same responsiveness. Three conditions are essential to the life of the group. The group is limited to five participants and is facilitated by Franklin Adkinson. The group will meet in-person at the Well. \nThis group has space for one new person this year. If you are feeling nudged to give Group Spiritual Direction a try\, please call the Well at 410-296-9355. We will connect you with Franklin so that you can discuss your interest with him. \nDATES: Saturdays – 10/21\, 11/18\, 12/16/2023 and 1/20\, 2/17\, 3/16\, 4/20\, 5/18/2024 \nTIME: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM\n\nCOST: $250\n\nLOCATION: Well for the Journey – 120 W. Seminary Ave\, Lutherville-Timonium\, MD 21093\n\nFACILITATOR: N. Franklin Adkinson\n\nFACILITATOR BIO:\nFranklin Adkinson is an Episcopal layman with ecumenical and interfaith orientation\, and a growing contemplative grounding.
SUMMARY:The Contemplative Practices of Jesus & Their Connection to Human Brain Science (In-Person Book Study)
DESCRIPTION:As spiritual seekers\, we often find ourselves searching for different ways of discovering the Divine in the circumstances of our lives\, both in ordinary moments and in seasons of crisis and growth. Each of the world’s faith traditions unfold through and around figures and teachings that foster this awareness. In the person and practices of Jesus\, we are invited to engage with the model he offers us in pausing and remembering to be with God in the midst of each of our days. \nWith this understanding\, you are invited to join us for a book study about Practice the Pause: Jesus’ Contemplative Practice\, New Brain Science\, and What It Means to Be Fully Human by Maryland local author and spiritual director\, Caroline Oakes. In this refreshing text\, she vividly explores recent developments in brain science\, which have proven that an intentional practice of pausing for a few minutes of meditation\, prayer\, or other contemplative practices actually rewires the human brain. These pauses create ways that make us calmer and less reactive\, and our world needs this mode of responding to each other more than ever. While recognizing that every spiritual tradition values this kind of contemplative pausing\, Oakes highlights Jesus’s own centering pause practice as a transformative path for becoming more “God aware\,” and sparking both personal and social change. \nDuring each session of this two-part program\, participants will have opportunities for engaging Oakes’ text through prayerful pauses\, creative and spiritual-oriented exercises\, and small and large group dialogue. Both sessions will explore different facets of brain science and its neuro-connections to the spiritual dimension of being human while also examining a few of the contemplative pause practices that Jesus would have been familiar with in his time\, culture\, and religious tradition. While participating in both sessions provides a fuller experience with the book and subject matter\, interested participants may register for either or both sessions. Prior reading of the text is not mandatory\, but is encouraged. Please bring a journal along for use during the program. \nDATE: Wednesdays\, May 29 & June 5\, 2024 \nTIME: 6:00 – 8:00 PM \nCOST: $30 per session or $50 for both \nLOCATION: Well for the Journey – 120 W. Seminary Ave\, Lutherville-Timonium\, MD 21093 \nREGISTRATION is required; please register here. \nCANCELLATION POLICY: Please read our cancellation policy\, here. \nIMPORTANT: You will receive an email from lorie@wellforthejourney.org at least 24 hours in advance of the start of your program. SUMMARY:The Establishment of Summer - A Mindful Outdoor Experience (In-Person Program)
DESCRIPTION:In our society\, we spend a lot of time inside and in front of a screen. Chances are good you are reading about this program on a screen within four walls right now. Yet we are part of creation\, and our bodies and spirits instinctively crave a connection with the great outdoors. Spending time in nature promotes an increased sense of relaxation and supports the body’s capacity for overall wellness and healing. \nWe are pleased to welcome back certified Kripalu Mindful Outdoor Guide and Yoga Instructor\, Jamila Keita\, for a Mindful Outdoor Experience (MOE) at the Well as we connect to the season of summer. This MOE invites participants to rediscover the joy in nature by engaging in practices that awaken the senses such as meditation\, mindful walking (sauntering)\, gentle stretching\, and forest bathing. Studies have found that a “regular dose of nature therapy” improves sleep\, reduces symptoms of depression\, combats stress\, increases vigor\, and boosts our immune systems. \nThe program is designed to give you an outdoor experience without having to go into a remote location. It is based on a nine-step practice developed by the Kripalu School of Mindful Outdoor Leadership (KSMOL). Jamila is thrilled to bring her love for nature and walking\, and her experience and joy guiding MOE’s throughout the Baltimore metro area\, to the Well’s backyard woods. \nNo prior experience is needed. Participants must have moderate mobility and be capable of walking on a wooded path.\n\nDATE: Friday\, June 28\, 2024 \nTIME: 11:30AM – 1:30PM \nCOST: $30 \nLOCATION: Well for the Journey – 120 W. If you are unable to find the email\, please check your SPAM or JUNK email folders. This email will include details to help you prepare for your program including any pertinent handouts\, location information\, and the ZOOM link for online programs. Please be sure you have received and read this email a minimum of 24 hours in advance of the start of the program. Thank you! \nFACILITATOR: Jamila Keita \nFACILITATOR BIO: \nHi! My name is Evangeline “Jamila” Keita. I’ve been practicing yoga for almost 25 years and decided to teach yoga as my “retirement job.” It was during my yoga training (YT200) that I was introduced to Yoga Nidra. Immediately after completing YT200 in 2014\, I took my first Yoga Nidra training. Since that time\, I’ve taken subsequent trainings in Yoga Nidra in 2017 and 2021. I love this practice. \nDuring the shutdown\, I found “nature therapy.” This led me to complete a course through “The Kripalu School of Outdoor Leadership” and become a KMOG (Kripalu Mindful Outdoor Guide). \nI currently work for Nature Worx\, a non-profit that provides mindful outdoor experiences and nature therapy to persons in recovery and the general public. I also teach two yoga classes per week on Zoom. Each class includes poses and a short Yoga Nidra session. Since 2022\, I have provided weekly Yoga Nidra sessions for Hopewell Cancer Support Center and occasional Mindful Outdoor Experiences (MOEs). Additionally\, I work for Nature Worx\, a non-profit that provides MOEs to persons in recovery and the general public.

SUMMARY:Conscious Connected Breathwork: An Introspective and Integrative Journey (In-Person Program)
DESCRIPTION:Introspective Breathwork™\, a form of conscious connected breathwork\, is a healing\, therapeutic modality which invites us into deeper relationship with ourselves. Breath is a bridge between matter and consciousness\, and its intentional\, mindful practice can ease stress and heal dysregulation in our nervous system\, bringing us to a greater degree of integrated peace\, embodied presence\, and self-insight. \nJoin Certified Introspective Breathwork™ Facilitator\, Amy Kulesa\, for an introduction and experience of conscious connected breathwork. Sometimes called “circular breathing\,” conscious connected breathwork involves deep\, diaphragmatic inhalations followed by natural\, unforced exhalation\, without a pause at the top and bottom of the breath. After a brief introduction to the history and practice of breathwork\, participants will breathe this way for an hour\, lying down on a mat or cushion\, to the accompaniment of ambient music. When breathing in this way\, you are in conscious control at all times of your own experience and can slow down or quicken your breath at any time\, pause to get a drink or use the restroom. Amy will offer support through compassionate and soulful presence and\, when appropriate\, through verbal prompts or gentle touch (with your permission). Following the breathwork practice\, there will be an integrative time of journaling\, stretching\, walking – whatever is helpful to you – to process the experience more fully and then a time of voluntary sharing as a group. \nThe breath’s integrative benefits are felt as we come into contact through deep presence to ourselves with an embodied experience of our emotions\, memories\, physical tensions\, and spiritual dimensions. This can allow us to behold ourselves in an expanded way within an enlarged\, more cosmic field of love and unitive consciousness. Conscious connected breathwork can gently support us in healing from stress\, the everyday tensions of our lives\, and deeper-seated unresolved effects from trauma. The environment for an Introspective Breathwork™ session is a nurturing\, safe space for self-exploration and coming into a deepened experience of transcendent Love. Each session and each person’s experience is unique\, as the breath facilitates movement of emotional energy up and through into consciousness and release\, and supports inner unity of body\, mind and spirit. \nStudies have found conscious connected breathwork to be very safe-rarely\, if ever\, do people experience adverse effects. Participants who are pregnant\, have a cardiac condition\, or other medical conditions such as bi-polar disorder or epilepsy\, need to be aware that activating breath practice affects the entire body’s systems. Participants are encouraged to discuss their interest in the program with their healthcare provider. All participants will be required to sign a release form after registration and return it to Amy for review. \nPLEASE NOTE: This program is being held in the Upper Room at the Well. Participants will need to walk up the stairs to the 3rd Floor. Additionally\, the length of the program will be 2 to 2.5 hours depending upon participant sharing. \nDATE: Saturday\, July 13\, 2024 \nTIME: 1:00 – 3:30 PM \nCOST: $50 \nLOCATION: Well for the Journey – 120 W. SUMMARY:Soul Care for the Caregiver: A Spiritual Approach (In-Person Program with Four Opportunities for Soul Care)
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this program consists of 4 individual opportunities for Soul Care for Caregivers\, each session with a different topic and focus. You can choose to attend\, one\, two\, three or all four sessions. (There is a discounted price offered if you sign up for all four.) \nMillions of people in the U.S. are in caregiving roles providing assistance and care for the daily needs of a loved one or client who is unable to fully care for themselves. We recognize that caregiving brings both gifts and challenges. Sometimes it is hard for Caregivers to see the gifts because of the physical and emotional strain of their daily care responsibilities. This program series is designed specifically to support and encourage Caregivers. \nWhether you already recognize the need for deepening self-care on your caregiving journey\, or this is your first step toward self-care\, let us be part of your support team! Our experienced Facilitators bring a rich and unique set of experience\, skills\, and gifts to their passion for Caregivers. They have chosen four topics that they feel are especially important for your self-care. We also know your schedule as a Caregiver is tight and you may not be able to make all four sessions. You are welcome to register for one\, a few\, or all four sessions. Please read on for the detailed description for each session. Each session is being held in-person at Well for the Journey in Lutherville. \n“Self-care is never a selfish act – it is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have\, the gift I was put on the earth to offer to others. Anytime we can listen to true self and give it the care it requires\, we do so not only for ourselves\, but for others whose lives we touch.” Parker Palmer\, Let Your Life Speak \n\nSession 1:  Beginnings and Endings: A Spiritual Journey- Thursday\, July 11th\, 6:30 – 8:00 PM (Judy Wright)\nThe caregiving journey\, like life\, is a series of beginnings and endings\, changes both welcome and unwelcome. In this first session of Soul Care for the Caregiver\, we will spend time reflecting on the challenges of caring for someone. Whether you are caring for a client or someone you love deeply\, the experience changes you. Using the poem “Beginnings and Endings” by Kate Bowler and Jessica Ritchie as a guide\, we will explore the emotions and spiritual underpinnings that provide sustenance and support for the beginnings and endings woven through the caregiving journey and how they change us. \nJudy Wright has been caregiving for almost 60 years\, both as a nurse and spiritual midwife. Caregiving is part of Judy’s bones. Learning how to care for herself while caring for others is a skill that Judy sees as being rooted in the light of divinity and the love that we share with each other. This time together is to help us share and explore what we are feeling\, questioning\, and wondering about on this journey. How do we find gratitude\, how do we find joy even during the toughest moments. Do we grow through the process of caring? Does our faith help us and bolster us? \nSession 2:  The Soundtrack of a Caregiving Life: A Musical Memory Workshop – Saturday\, July 20th\, 1:00 – 2:30 PM (Lauren Knatz)\nHave you ever listened to a song from your youth that transported you right back to the exact time and place where you first heard it? Experts refer to this as a reminiscence bump: a time between adolescence and young adulthood\, when musical memory was first paired with autobiographical memory and filed away for safekeeping. \nIn this second session\, Lauren Knatz\, musician\, author\, storyteller\, and believer in the healing power of music\, will take you on a journey of restoration\, self-discovery and self-reflection\, specially designed for caregivers\, and give you the tools to: \n· Unlock the musical memories within the framework of a traditional folk song\n· Explore and record the feelings and images that resonate with spontaneity and curiosity\n· Reconnect with the significant people\, places & events that have given your life meaning & spiritual presence\n· Reexamine past experiences with renewed clarity\, discernment\, and lovingkindness\n· Realign with the power of forgiveness and reconciliation\n· Foster lasting bonds with fellow caregivers through the retelling of shared experiences\n· Uncover universal themes that resonate both personally and collectively\n· Sing together to relieve stress\, build community and increase social bonding\n· Rest and restore with the soothing sounds of live music \nSession 3: Sacred Grieving as Self-Care & Compassion – Wednesday\, August 7th\, 6:30 PM-8:30 PM (Gordon Creamer)\nThe concept of grieving loss as a journey allows human beings to understand the healing process in stages\, with accompanying tasks\, and with needs that are both universal and unique. Yet\, there are many faces to grief and innumerable ways of expressing it. And\, the experience of caregiving for loved ones and clients involves its own dimensions of engaging with the landscape of loss and the numerous ways it can impact our identities\, abilities\, and ways of connecting with ourselves and others in definitive ways. \nThe reality of caregiving\, the myriad emotions it creates\, and the constant demands it requires offer us an opportunity to recognize our feelings and reflect upon our experiences with validation. Moreover\, processing this all through a lens of grief can empower individuals to access necessary healing in order move forward in empowered ways on their journey while still tending to loved ones or clients as caregivers. \nJoin Gordon Creamer\, Program Director at Well for the Journey\, Spiritual Director\, and experienced retreat and workshop leader\, for this third session that incorporates a spiritual approach to the grief work that is intrinsic to caregiving. As we gather together\, we will engage in opportunities for storytelling and listening\, meditation and journaling\, and other meaningful exercises. Various educational and self-care resources will be offered to uplift participants on their journey as they consider their respective circumstances in light of the sacred tasks inherent to grieving while caregiving. And\, in solidarity with other caregivers\, take steps toward openness to the powerful transformation that losses and intentional grief work can lead us to\, both within our caregiving roles and daily lives. \n\nSession 4: Caregiving and the Love Languages: Understanding & Creating Meaning – Monday\, August 19th\, 6:30 – 8:00 PM (Gordon Creamer)\nThe reality of caregiving in this era is one that often includes exhaustive to-do lists\, never-ending appointments and adjustments\, and striving to meet ever-changing demands. And\, it’s more than obvious that the experience of this is not conducive to the critical time needed for personal reflection upon the meaning of our exchanges with those for whom we are caregiving. In our fourth session of this series\, we will explore the innovative concept of the five love languages as described by Gary Chapman and how it can be applied to us as individuals as well as the relationships we encounter as caregivers for loved ones or patients. We will also consider the groundbreaking work that Chapman and co-authors\, Deborah Barr and Ed Shaw\, have created in connecting the world of love languages to the harsh realities of caregiving\, especially for those with dementia and other life-limiting conditions. By weaving in various concepts and creative exercises from their text\, Keeping Love Alive As Memories Fade: The Five Love Languages and the Alzheimer’s Journey\, you will be invited to expand in understanding your own personal love language\, that of the person you are caring for\, and also what related possibilities exist for deeper meaning and renewal in your life and caregiving. \nJoin Gordon Creamer\, Program Director at Well for the Journey\, Spiritual Director\, and experienced retreat and workshop leader\, for this final session in our Soul Care for the Caregiver series. As we gather together\, we will engage in opportunities for storytelling and listening\, meditation\, and journaling among other spiritual-oriented exercises. Information about the love languages and diverse opportunities for their integration will be introduced to empower you as you reflect upon your respective circumstances in light of caregiving with love. This final session will provide a safe\, sacred space for you to re-envision your daily tasks\, multi-faceted lives\, and inherent desire to be loving in your current caregiver situation and within your ongoing journey ahead. We hope you can join us! \nCOST: Cost per session varies (see registration form at link below.) \nLOCATION: Well for the Journey – 120 W. Thank you! \nFACILITATORS: \nJudy Wright\nJudy Wright is a retired nurse\, a Spiritual Director\, wife\, and mother of two adult children. She worked for 50 years as an R.N after graduating Nursing School from Church\, Home\, and Hospital. At the age of 65\, she obtained her M.A. from Loyola University\, Maryland and became a Spiritual Director. To Judy\, spiritual direction is not truly directing\, but rather sitting with\, and guiding someone who is searching for a new and deeper spiritual life. Thus\, she sees herself as a midwife\, being alongside those who are open to birthing a new relationship with the Divine. \nJudy is also an active Episcopalian\, serving her local church in various ways on the vestry\, as a Eucharistic Minister\, a member of the prayer group and St. Luke’s ministry\, and a spiritual facilitator of a weekly woman’s group\, Additionally\, she has been part of the Diocesan Council of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland\, a co-chair of the Reparations Committee\, and is presently a co-chair of the Commission of Ministry. Judy also serves on the Board of Directors for the Well for the Journey and as Chairperson of the Program Circle. \nLauren Knatz\nLauren Knatz has performed acoustic guitar with vocal accompaniment for seniors\, hospice patients and special needs populations for over twenty years. She is an author\, folk musician\, and storyteller\, who collects the stories and favorite music of those residing in all levels of care in Central Pa and Md. \nLauren is a strong advocate for those living with life altering conditions and her work focuses on using music as a tool to give voice to the memories stored within the context of a song. She believes that a song can be compared to an individual’s life – when you understand the inspiration and historical context behind a song\, the notes resonate with deeper clarity. Similarly\, when we are empowered to reflect upon our own lives\, we begin to recognize each turning point as a channel to greater peace and understanding. \nLauren’s work has gained the recognition of York Hospital Family Medicine\, where she has presented to resident doctors integrating Narrative Medicine\, a person-centered\, clinical approach from Columbia University that honors the narrative of the patient to improve communication\, instill empathy\, and promote healing. \nGordon Creamer\nGordon Creamer\, creator of The Mission Bridge \, joined the Well’s Staff in July 2022 as Program Director. He has been involved in healthcare programming and operations since 2001 at various Assisted Living\, Skilled Nursing\, and Hospice communities. He earned an MA in Spiritual & Pastoral Care from Loyola University and an MA in Theology from the Ecumenical Institute of St. Mary’s Seminary & University. He is currently a candidate for the Doctor of Ministry Program at the Ecumenical Institute.\nGordon has facilitated numerous retreats and workshops that focus on creating opportunities for participants to explore and enhance their spirituality and well-being through various media and practices. Uplifting the journey of adults\, individuals with memory impairment\, and members of the LGBTQ+ community is a passion for him. In the last several years\, he has fostered support groups and programs for caregivers and those who are grieving losses. Gordon is also a trained end-of-life doula\, certified spiritual director\, and Reiki Practitioner\, who welcomes all in discovering the spiritual life as a means of healing\, growing\, and thriving.

SUMMARY:My Life with the Jedi: The Spirituality of Star Wars - An Author-Led Book Study with Wine & Cheese (In-Person Program)
DESCRIPTION:Star Wars isn’t all laser swords and space wizards; at the heart of this global franchise is a call to discern between forces of light and dark. This is familiar language to anyone engaged in a spiritual journey. St. Ignatius of Loyola\, a Catholic soldier-turned-mystic saint\, developed a whole spiritual system dedicated to ferreting out the dark side in favor of the light. Nearly 500 years later\, the spirituality that bears his name is just as relevant to our lives. \nIn My Life with the Jedi: The Spirituality of Star Wars\, award-winning author\, and this year’s  speaker at our Well Said Speaker Series event\, Eric A. Clayton brings the stories of Star Wars into dialogue with Ignatian spiritualty\, inviting readers to reflect on their own struggles\, decisions\, vocations and\, ultimately\, the constant call to discover new hope. Join us for a relaxing summer evening of wine\, cheese\, and engaging study as Eric guides us in an intimate discussion through key themes from his book\, inviting us to reflect together\, share our own spiritual journeys\, and grow as a community along the way. \nDATE: Sunday\, July 21\, 2024 \nTIME: 6:30 – 8:30 PM \nPROGRAM COST: $35 \nTO PURCHASE THE BOOK:  Click here to purchase Eric’s Book from Amazon or call your favorite local bookseller to order. \nLOCATION: Well for the Journey – 120 W. SUMMARY:Honoring the Gifts of Summer: A Sacred Circle Dance Gathering for Women (In-Person Program)
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome back Lisa Bardack\, Sacred Circle Dance Facilitator\, for another sacred circle dance gathering at the Well! \nSacred circle dance is a collective dance experience that draws from ancient and traditional folk dances\, many from Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Dancing to wonderful music and rhythms\, we join the circle of grandmothers who initiated these dances and passed them on. Dancing in their footsteps\, we experience a sense of something greater than ourselves\, a continuum of which we are a sacred part. The dances evoke joy\, peace\, insight\, healing and a powerful sense of community and interconnection with each other and all life. \nBorn from the Earth\, these dances connect us to the rhythms of the seasons and the cycles of life. Moving as one to encoded energy patterns\, we learn about our basic relationships of being in our bodies\, being on Earth\, being in community and being present to the source of all life. \nIn this workshop\, we will dance to honor the gifts of Summer\, the active season of joy\, the season of the heart. We will dance\, too\, to honor the arrival of Late Summer\, a season that sits between the fullness of summer and the beginning of autumn. We will dance between the energies of joy and abundance\, and the need to ground and center\, allowing for time to stop the wheels of our ‘doings’ and simply ‘be’\, allowing for time to reflect on where we are and observe the nourishing experiences we’ve created in our lives. \nNo dance experience is required (just basic mobility and coordination)\, as the dances are simple to moderately easy\, and the step sequences repetitive. Lisa will gently guide us in the dance steps and share meaningful information on the origins of each dance. You can dance in bare feet\, socks\, or soft soled shoes. \nIf you love to dance\, or perhaps love the idea of sacred dance and are curious to learn more\, come and enjoy a beautiful afternoon of movement meditation in the safe and nurturing environment that is the Well! Registration is limited to 8 participants\, so please don’t delay! \nDATE: Saturday\, July 27\, 2024 \nTIME: 2:00 – 4:00 PM \nCOST: $45 \nLOCATION: Well for the Journey – 120 W. It was in 1997 that she first experienced Sacred Circle Dance and fell in love with this collective experience of dancing ancient and traditional steps to wonderful music from around the world. She has studied Sacred Circle Dance for over 15 years through classes and conferences nationally and internationally and has been teaching since 2008. In addition to her background in dance\, Lisa has also studied yoga\, tai chi\, qigong\, NIA\, and other forms of dance\, cultivating a seasoned understanding of body movement as an instrument for joy\, healing\, and wisdom.

SUMMARY:Writing to Heal (In-Person Program)
DESCRIPTION:Lindsey Pope is the author of five books\, a speaker and workshop leader\, and a busy mom who is passionate about sharing love\, laughter\, and healing through writing. She developed Writing to Heal based on her own experience coming out of a mental health crisis battling severe anxiety and depression. Lindsey used this method of writing in her own healing and found it so helpful and transformative that she felt called to share it with others. \nIn this interactive program\, Lindsey invites participants to use writing as a method for healing. Research has shown that journaling positively affects people’s mental health by lowering anxiety\, stopping rumination cycles\, and increasing self-awareness (source: www.webmd.com/mental-health/mental-health-benefits-of-journaling ). While writing is a free activity that can be done at any time and any place\, some people need a little help getting started. \nLindsey provides engaging exercises and writing prompts to help people get started in a way that’s comfortable for them\, while also encouraging participants to open up in an emotionally safe environment. Participants will engage in a variety of individual and group exercises and also learn strategies to continue this practice on their own time. No prior writing or journaling experience is needed for this evening of self-care\, laughter\, and healing through writing. \n\n  \nDATE: Wednesday\, September 11\, 2024 \nTIME: 6:00 – 8:00 PM \nCOST: $35 \nLOCATION: Well for the Journey – 120 W.
