SUMMARY:Spiritual Autobiography: Exploring the Story of Your Life Through Writing (Online Program)
DESCRIPTION:A testimonial about this program from last year…\n“Amy is an excellent facilitator! I was amazed at all of the insights that surfaced during this writing process. The opportunity to both share and receive each other’s stories was very special. I would highly recommend this program to anyone wanting to deepen their spirituality and self-awareness while connecting with others.”  – Jean Anne Walsh \nIrish poet Pádraig Ó Tuama affirms that we are all “story full and lovely.” Indeed\, these stories are how we remember and share the journey of our lives\, both collectively and individually. \nThrough six sessions together-and reflective time between sessions-participants will respond through writing (and other creative modes) to gentle prompts that can help us to write the stories of our individual spiritual journeys. We all live this spiritual journey every day\, whether or not we are grounded in a specific religious tradition. Indeed\, most wisdom traditions affirm that we live this spiritual-or inward-journey in the daily moments that we need to take time to notice. By writing with and for other attentive writers\, we will honor the things that make us human together and share\, as Ó Tuama invites “the things that do not fade: generosity\, truth-telling\, silence\, respect\, and love.” \nOur times together will be for listening to one another’s stories. We gather not to offer feedback or critique (as you might find in a traditional writing workshop) or to teach one another how to write a spiritual autobiography. We gather to receive the gifts that flow through each other’s generous sharing of our lives\, and to open ourselves to our own story. \nWe are thrilled to welcome back Amy Schmaljohn for another session of this meaningful and inspiring program. Join Amy and others to remember\, write\, and share the journey that is uniquely your own. No previous writing experience is required! \nDATE: Mondays\, 1/13\, 1/20\, 1/27\, 2/3\, 2/10\, and 2/17/25 \nTIME: 6:30 – 8:30 PM ET \nCOST: Early Bird Discount (purchased prior to 12/1/24) – $150; Regular Cost (purchased 12/2/24 and after) – $170 \nLOCATION: ZOOM \nREGISTRATION is required; please register here. \nCANCELLATION POLICY:  Please read our cancellation policy\, here. \nIMPORTANT: You will receive an email from lorie@wellforthejourney.org at least 24 hours in advance of the start of your program. If you are unable to find the email\, please check your SPAM or JUNK email folders. This email will include details to help you prepare for your program including any pertinent handouts\, location information\, and the ZOOM link for online programs. Please be sure you have received and read this email a minimum of 24 hours in advance of the start of the program. Thank you! \nFACILITATOR: Amy Schmaljohn \nFACILITATOR BIO: \nAmy Schmaljohn enjoyed a 35 year career as a leader and teacher in both higher education and at Friends School of Baltimore (Quaker). Her classrooms offered students opportunities to explore world literature and art\, movements for nonviolent social transformation\, and the human experience of religion across global traditions. A member of Gunpowder Friends Meeting (Quaker)\, she leads contemplative spiritual retreats in the tradition of the Religious Society of Friends and offers spiritual deepening programs for seekers in the Baltimore region. She is enlivened by the sharing of our stories\, by the mystery and power of the written word\, and by her daily encounters with the natural world just outside her doorstep. Amy and her husband Alan\, a retired virologist\, live in northwestern Baltimore County\, where they steward seventeen acres of woodland\, meadow and streams that have been placed in the Maryland Environmental Trust and serve as a gathering space for those seeking immersive experiences in nature.

SUMMARY:Deconstructing Your Faith\, Re-envisioning Your Spirituality (Online Program)
DESCRIPTION:Do you ever wonder about the image of God you are carrying?… Have you reached a place in your human journey where you are questioning the faith tradition that you have been a part of and its relevance to your spiritual journey?… Has the faith community/tradition you made a home in brought wounding\, confusion\, or despair to you in navigating the transitions and thresholds of your life?… \nIf the answer that arises within you as you ponder these questions is ‘yes\,’ please know that you are not alone. Current statistics reveal to us that in the United States the number of individuals who are affiliated with a particular faith tradition and/or denomination continue to decrease. Many people are questioning the role of religion in their lives and decidedly searching for alternatives to a worship community and complicated doctrines. \nIn this sacred pursuit\, more and more questions abound as humanity struggles to listen more deeply to God’s authentic voice in their everyday lives. In this listening\, many are discovering a divine invitation to pause and reconsider the meaning underlying this reality. Perhaps\, a way to move forward is to explore the possibility of deconstructing the faith we carry while re-envisioning the purpose and possibilities of what it is to live from our deeper spiritual identity. \nJoin Well for the Journey’s own Greg Cochran and Gordon Creamer for this online series\, where we will explore the pressing questions in our hearts around this wrestling with what it means to practice the faith we carry – or were taught to carry\, while welcoming a deep\, unfed spiritual hunger. At this critical juncture in our personal and collective histories\, intentionally spending time in this way is not only an act of great self-compassion and care\, it can also become an embodied expression of healing for others whom we are connected to in the world. While in the presence of sacred and safe community\, each session will invite participants to engage in a period of contemplative silence around an excerpt from various wisdom writings\, such as bell hooks\, Richard Rohr\, Barbara Brown Taylor\, and Brian McLaren among others. Also included will be opportunities for personal reflection\, journaling\, small and large group discussions\, and other creative spiritual exercises. \nBelow offers a glimpse of what the emphasis will be for each of the sessions in this series:\nSession 1 – Creating a Sacred Space to Deconstruct\nSession 2 – Querying the Purpose of Religion\nSession 3 – The Spiritual Nature of Being Human and Becoming\nSession 4 – Coming Home to Yourself\nSession 5 – Energizing Personal & Community Spiritual Practices\nSession 6 – Living Meaningfully in Spirit \nDATE: Thursdays\, 1/30\, 2/6\, 2/13\, 2/20\, 2/27\, 3/6/2025 \nTIME: 6:30 – 8:00 PM ET \nCOST: Registration cost for this program has three options – $200\, $175\, or $150. The Well is delighted to be able to offer this opportunity to you. Please select the ticket option that meets your financial abilities/needs at this time. Thank you! \nREGISTRATION is required; please register here. \n CANCELLATION POLICY: Please read our cancellation policy\, here.  \nLOCATION: ZOOM \nIMPORTANT: You will receive an email from programming@wellforthejourney.org at least 24 hours in advance of the start of your program. SUMMARY:Is Hope Real? Engaging with the Book of Hope (4-Part Online Series)
DESCRIPTION:It’s so easy to come up with a list of problems in our world and in our lives. Jane Goodall\, naturalist and advocate for animals and the climate\, is keenly aware of how challenging life is today. She faces the facts: a loss of connection to the natural world\, extinction of species\, reliance on fossil fuels\, devastating fires and floods\, polluted rivers\, a worsening of hurricanes and typhoons\, industrial farming\, poverty\, and climate refugees. \nShe experienced life in World War II and knows the tragedies of current wars\, terrorism\, economic disparities and what she calls evil. \nShe is keenly aware of the impacts of these catastrophic events\, but when asked the question\, “Do you honestly believe there is hope for our world? For the future and our children and grandchildren?” She responds: “Truthfully\, yes.” \nAt our first gathering\, we will begin to uncover the deeper understanding of hope that Jane expresses in her conversation with Douglas Abrams in The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times. Jane is “focused around four main reasons for hope: The amazing human intellect\, the resilience of nature\, the power of youth\, and the indomitable human spirit.” We will consider the first two reasons in week two\, and the second two in week three. In week four\, we will ponder how we can be messengers of hope. \nUsing The Book of Hope as a resource\, we will review selected readings\, engage in small group conversation and reflective time\, and consider how Jane gives us ways to be hopeful in times of rapid and potentially harmful change. Participants are encouraged to read the book and have it handy for Zoom sessions. \nIn our ongoing effort to provide “hope” to as many in our community and beyond\, we are pleased to be able to offer a sliding scale for registration for this program. Please select the ticket option that meets your financial abilities/needs at this time. \nDATE: Fridays\, 1/10\, 1/17\, 1/24\, and 2/7/25 \nTIME: 1:00 – 2:30 PM ET \nLOCATION: ZOOM \nCOST: Registration cost for this program has three options from which you can choose – $120\, $95\, or $80. The Well is delighted to be able to offer this opportunity to you. Please select the ticket option that meets your financial abilities/needs at this time. SUMMARY:Group Spiritual Direction 2024-2025 with Cathy Rosensteel (In-Person & Online)
DESCRIPTION:Group Spiritual Direction is a process in which people gather together on a regular basis to assist one another in an ongoing awareness of God (Spirit\, Source\, Creator\, whatever your name is) in all of life. Participants in the group are seeking support for their responsiveness to God and they agree to support others in that same responsiveness. This contemplative approach to spiritual direction is grounded in the model that originated at the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation in Washington\, DC. . \nJoining the group is a deep commitment to one’s spiritual journey and to the other participants in the group. Three conditions are essential to the life of the group. Members must agree to: \n· Commit themselves to an honest relationship with God\, by whatever name called.\n· Participate wholeheartedly in the group process through consistent attendance and prayerful listening and response.\n· Open their spiritual journeys for consideration by others. \nThe group is limited to five participants and is facilitated by Cathy Rosensteel. The group will meet both in-person at the Well and on Zoom as noted below. \nCathy’s group has space for one new person this year. If you are feeling urged to give Group Spiritual Direction a try\, please call the Well at 410-296-9355. We will connect you with Cathy so that you can discuss your interest with her. \nDATES (In-Person at the Well): Saturdays – 9/28\, 10/12\, 11/9/24 and 3/8\, 4/12\, 5/10/25 \nDATES (Online via Zoom): Saturdays – 12/14/24 and 1/11\, 2/8/25 \nTIME: 8:30 – 11:00 AM \nCOST: $250 \nLOCATION: Well for the Journey – 120 W. Seminary Ave\, Lutherville-Timonium\, MD 21093 and ZOOM \nTO REGISTER:  Call the Well at 410-296-9355. SUMMARY:Yoga Nidra – Guided Meditation & Stillness (Online Program)
DESCRIPTION:Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation practice that helps to relax the mind and body by doing “nothing.” This ancient practice produces a profound state of relaxation just by listening. \nOne hour of Yoga Nidra is equal to four (4) hours of sleep. As the mind slows down\, our thoughts begin to move away from us. Yoga Nidra happens in the space between waking and sleeping. It’s like floating! You disengage from stress-producing thoughts\, allowing the body\, mind\, and spirit to rest and heal naturally. Modern studies have validated the benefits of Yoga Nidra; showing that a guided meditation is very effective in reducing anxiety\, stress\, and depression. \nResting comfortably in your own home\, the practice can be done lying down or in a seated position with your feet up. All you have to do is listen. These are the items you will need: \n· A quiet place to lay down or recline.\n· Pillow for head and under your knees.\n· Blanket for warmth.\n· If desired\, an eye mask or pillow to block light.\n· Water to drink. \nThe Well is thrilled to continue our relationship with certified Kripalu Mindful Outdoor Guide\, Yoga Instructor\, and I Am Yoga Nidra Facilitator\, Jamila Keita to offer this deeply healing and restorative practice. Most individuals report feelings of enhanced well-being\, calm and better sleep after each session. Many feel relaxed and energized. \nIf you are new to meditation\, never tried or been successful at meditation\, we encourage you to give Yoga Nidra a try. You will be amazed at how easily you will achieve a meditative state. \nThe sessions are being offered twice a month on a Monday and Tuesday evening. You are welcome to purchase one session at a time or choose all sessions at a discounted rate. \nDATES: Mondays – 2/10 and 3/10/25 and Tuesdays – 2/25 and 3/25/25 \nTIME: 7:30 – 8:30 PM ET \nCOST: $15 per session\, All 4 sessions for $50 \nREGISTRATION is required; please register here. \nCANCELLATION / REFUND POLICY: Please see our policy\, here. \nLOCATION: ZOOM \nIMPORTANT: You will receive an email from lorie@wellforthejourney.org at least 24 hours in advance of the start of your program. If you are unable to find the email\, please check your SPAM or JUNK email folders. This email will include details to help you prepare for your program including any pertinent handouts\, location information\, and the ZOOM link for online programs. My name is Evangeline “Jamila” Keita. I’ve been practicing yoga for almost 25 years and decided to teach yoga as my “retirement job.” It was during my yoga training (YT200) that I was introduced to Yoga Nidra. Immediately after completing YT200 in 2014\, I took my first Yoga Nidra training. Since that time\, I’ve taken subsequent trainings in Yoga Nidra in 2017 and 2021. I love this practice. \nDuring the shutdown\, I found “nature therapy.” This led me to complete a course through “The Kripalu School of Outdoor Leadership” and become a KMOG (Kripalu Mindful Outdoor Guide). \nI currently teach two yoga classes per week on Zoom. Each class includes poses and a short Yoga Nidra session. Since 2022\, I have provided weekly Yoga Nidra sessions for Hopewell Cancer Support Center and occasional Mindful Outdoor Experiences (MOEs). Additionally\, I work for Nature Worx\, a non-profit that provides MOEs to persons in recovery and the general public. \nI never imagined this second career as it is\, but it seems like a natural evolution to me. I hope you enjoy my offerings.

Beginners are often quite surprised and pleased at what they create. “Anything is possible one stroke at a time.” That is the Zentangle tag line. \nWhile the final drawing in each of the three classes will be quite different\, Becky will use the Zentangle method and patterns for all of the work. The paper/tile shape will be rectangular for class one\, square for class two\, and round for class three. \nEach of the sessions can stand alone\, so participation in all three is not necessary. Additionally\, the sessions will be recorded. If you register and are unable to attend the live class\, you can follow along on the video recording that will be sent to all who register. \nDATES & TIMES:\n· Tuesday\, February 18 • 6:30-8:30 PM ET\n· Wednesday\, February 26 • 10:00 AM-Noon ET\n· Sunday\, March 2nd • 3-5 PM ET \nCOST: $25 per session or $60 for all three sessions \nLOCATION: ZOOM \nREGISTRATION is required; please register here. \nCANCELLATION POLICY: Please read our cancellation policy\, here. \nIMPORTANT: You will receive an email from programming@wellforthejourney.org at least 24 hours in advance of the start of your program. She is now a firm believer that\, as the creators of Zentangle® say\, “Anything is possible\, one stroke at a time. ™” \nBecky returns to The Well having taught in person and Zoom Zentangle classes for us since 2020.

SUMMARY:Seven Sacred Pauses for Life's Daily Pilgrimage (Online Program Meeting Monthly)
DESCRIPTION:“All it takes is a simple\, sacred pause to get us in touch with the One who keeps vigil with us – the holy presence of so many names. Only you can name that which waits for you.” – Macrina Wiederkehr \nNo matter what spiritual path we follow\, we are all pilgrims together on each day’s journey. The details of our daily pilgrimage differ one from another\, but we all hope for a good day as we awake and move through the day with whatever joys and challenges await us. In her classic book\, Seven Sacred Pauses – Living Mindfully Through the Hours of the Day\, Macrina Wiederkehr invites us to embrace the rich tradition of consciously pausing at seven sacred moments of each day so that our daily passage through time is more of a sacred pilgrimage than one long To Do List. She encourages us to stay awake through the day\, “Each morning as I look out my window\, I want to be awake enough to say\, today I will remember to pause.” \nYou are invited to journey through the hours with spiritual companion and retreat leader\, Lorie Conway\, as we explore ways to practice pausing that recognize the busyness\, clutter\, noise\, and chaos that are rampant in our culture\, while gently encouraging us to be creators of our present moment. Each month will explore a different hour of the day and engage with contemplative spiritual practices that may be well suited for that time. We will use Wiederkehr’s book as a guide to the hours as we engage poetry\, music\, reflections\, and sacred text from an array of spiritual teachers and traditions. Please note\, it is not necessary to read the book as it is only one of many resources that will be utilized. \nOur monthly topics include:\n· September 26th – Introduction to Sacred Pausing\n· October 24th – The Awakening Hour – Dawn\n· November 21st – The Blessing Hour – Midmorning\n· December 12th – The Hour of Illumination – Midday\n· January 23rd – The Wisdom Hour – Midafternoon\n· February 20th – The Twilight Hour – Evening\n· March 20th – The Great Silence – Night\n· April 24th – The Night Watch – Midnight Until Dawn \nYou are welcome to join us for one\, many\, or all of the 8 monthly sessions. Lorie encourages you to join the first one\, if possible\, as it lays the groundwork for subsequent months. If you are unable to join the first one\, no worries! A handout will be provided to give you foundational information. \nDATES: Thursdays – 9/26\, 10/24\, 11/21\, 12/12/24\, and 1/23\, 2/20\, 3/20\, 4/24/25 \nTIME: 2:00 – 3:30 PM ET \nCOST: $35 per session or $250 for all 8 sessions \nREGISTRATION is required; please register here. \nCANCELLATION POLICY:  Please read our cancellation policy\, here. \nLOCATION: ZOOM \nIMPORTANT: You will receive an email from lorie@wellforthejourney.org at least 24 hours in advance of the start of your program.
SUMMARY:Ancient Myths & Their Wisdom for Contemporary Spiritual Seekers (Online Series)
DESCRIPTION:“A myth… is a metaphor for a mystery beyond human comprehension. It is a comparison that helps us understand\, by analogy\, some aspect of our mysterious selves. A myth\, in this way of thinking\, is not an untruth but a way of reaching a profound truth.” ~ Christopher Vogler \nThe word myth is saturated with numerous\, sometimes negative connotations in contemporary times. Often\, it is associated with being an untruth or a fabricated statement. Yet\, this recent usage of the word ignores the rich\, timeless value for which myths were originally conceived. Join us for this multi-part series that will explore some of the world’s prominent mythologies in their original light and the deep spiritual wisdom cradled within them. Excerpts of myths will be gathered from the Egyptian\, Greek\, Chinese\, Celtic and Native American traditions amongst other cultures. Additional sources will include Michael Meade’s Awakening the Soul and his long-running podcast series\, Living Myth. \nWithin each session\, there will be abundant opportunities to creatively experience these myths and connect with the parallels they offer to contemporary spiritual seekers and their personal journeys. Centralizing themes from each of the featured mythologies will be highlighted in each session of the series. While pertinent information related to respective myths will be provided\, also woven throughout each session will be time for contemplative silence and meditation\, journaling\, personal reflection\, and group discussion. Participants will emerge from the series with a timely and deepened awareness about the gifts and relevance of myths and the healing role they can serve in cultivating understanding and peace in our world today. \nMythological journeys will unfold along the following schedule as we journey with diversely different cultures and traditions from around the world: \n· January 28th – Egyptian Mythology\n· February 25th – Greek Mythology\n· March 25th – Chinese Mythology\n· April 29th (5th Tuesday) – Celtic Mythology\n· May 27th – Native American Mythologies \nPlease Note: Attendance is encouraged in each session of this series\, however\, interested participants can register for one\, a few\, or all programs depending on personal preference and availability. \nDATE: Tuesdays – 1/28\, 2/25\, 3/25\, 4/29\, and 5/27/25 \nTIME: 1:00 – 3:00 PM ET \nCOST: $200 for Series or $45 per Session \nREGISTRAION is required; please register here. \n CANCELLATION POLICY: Please read our cancellation policy\, here.  \nLOCATION: ZOOM \nIMPORTANT: You will receive an email from programming@wellforthejourney.org at least 24 hours in advance of the start of your program.
This email will include details to help you prepare for your program including any pertinent handouts\, location information\, and the ZOOM link for online programs. Please be sure you have received and read this email a minimum of 24 hours in advance of the start of the program. Thank you! \nFACILITATOR: Jamila Keita \nFACILITATOR BIO: \nHi!

SUMMARY:Winter Zentangle (Online Program)
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome Becky Boynton back to the Well this Winter as she returns for another offering of Zentangle®! Becky\, a Certified Zentangle Teacher\, is excited to guide others in learning this step-by-step method that can expand your sense of being creative and positively contribute to your overall experience of well-being. You are invited and encouraged to participate in this upcoming program whether you have never “tangled” before or if you have prior experience with Zentangle. \nThe Zentangle® Method is a simple\, relaxing\, fun way to create beautiful abstract designs by drawing structured patterns. Participants only need paper\, pencil\, a black fine line pen and some Q-Tips or other blending tool. No previous skills or experience are needed; just a willingness to put pen to paper. \nWhile the process may look intricate\, it is a deceptively simple pathway to improve your well-being. In addition to verbal instructions\, you will receive handouts before class that will assist you in following Becky’s live video demonstrations. \nThe benefits of Zentangle are numerous and include increased confidence\, relaxation\, and inspiration. This practice also enhances focus\, heightens mindfulness\, and fosters a deeper sense of meaningfulness on a spiritual level. Thank you! \nFACILITATOR: Becky Boynton \nFACILITATOR BIO: \nBecky Boynton taught elementary school for 27 years in Virginia and Maryland\, in both public and private schools. Most recently she served as the Service-Learning Coordinator at the Friends School of Baltimore. A longtime volunteer at a food pantry and financial assistance center in Baltimore\, she now volunteers teaching Zentangle® on Zoom. She was first introduced to Zentangle in 2012 and has been tangling ever since. In 2018 she became a CZT (Certified Zentangle Teacher) by attending the four-day training program in Providence\, RI. She has been teaching Zentangle® since 2018. \nBefore Zentangle® she considered herself a crafter\, not an artist. Zentangle® has changed that. This step-by-step method is easy to learn\, relaxing and a fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. It increases focus and creativity. She enjoys bringing this technique to those who do not see themselves as capable of creating art. She is now a firm believer that\, as the creators of Zentangle® say\, “Anything is possible\, one stroke at a time. ™” \nBecky returns to The Well having taught in person and Zoom Zentangle classes for us since 2020.

SUMMARY:FREE Information Session - The Body Holds\, The Body Heals: Restoring Balance\, Releasing Stress\, Creating Calming Practices
DESCRIPTION:Are you going through your day feeling overly sensitive\, too reactive\, or easily triggered? Or do you feel numb most days\, simply going through the motions? By the time we are adults\, most of us are walking warriors\, holding stress and trauma in our bodies as we’ve had to survive and simply soldier on. In the short run\, our bodies may be able to do this\, holding it together to get through. However\, over time\, we cannot keep up this pace. Our bodies become overwhelmed as they hold our stressed experiences. They develop pain\, fatigue\, injury\, or disease\, as they can no longer repress all they have held over time. \nIf you are curious about somatic (body-focused) practices and rituals\, and want to learn a little more\, please join certified Somatic Experience Practitioner\, Emily Kearns\, for a FREE Information Session on Zoom. Emily will share a little about how the body holds and the power of the body to be a healing resource\, as well as what you can expect in her upcoming mini-retreats at the Well. You will also have an opportunity to ask questions. \nThere is no obligation to attend a retreat if you attend the Information Session. Give your body the gift of this half-hour to listen and learn\, and let your Curiosity be your Guide! \nThe Information Session is free and will be recorded. Please register so that we can send you the Zoom link. If you are unable to attend the information session\, we will be happy to send you the recording. \nDATE: Thursday\, February 27\, 2025 \nTIME: 7:00 – 7:30 PM \nCOST: FREE \nLOCATION: ZOOM \nRSVP:  RSVP is required to receive the Zoom link.  Please RSVP here. \nIMPORTANT: You will receive an email from programming@wellforthejourney.org at least 24 hours in advance of the start of your program. Her caregiving experience with her parents\, who lived with dementia\, sensitized her to how the body holds and also\, how the body heals. Her Reiki volunteer work in Boston’s Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital’s Integrative Medicine Program\, further awakened her to the power of the body to be a healing\, integrating resource. Emily earned her doctorate in sociology\, focusing her study and teaching on the body\, dance\, and ritual.
